Grouse Gulch Mine Closure Project

High Elevation Mine Closures

Ryno Construction was contracted by the State of Colorado Division of Reclamation, Mining, and Safety to perform emergency mine closures in the remote and high-elevation terrain of Grouse Gulch near Silverton, Colorado. The project was initiated on an expedited timeline due to hazardous conditions and the threat of incoming weather.

Our team installed a variety of closure types, including:

Native rock bulkhead closures

Corrugated metal pipe (CMP) closures

Polyurethane foam (PUF) shaft plugs

Coordination of Helicopter Long Lining

Due to the site’s extreme remoteness and elevation, all materials had to be airlifted to each mine location. Ryno Construction coordinated closely with an expert helicopter pilot, using a 100-foot long line to transport and place large steel pipe, mortar bags, and foam materials across sparsely spaced mine sites along the mountainside.

Operating under a compressed one-week timeline, Ryno mobilized a specialized crew capable of executing the work quickly and safely. Despite the challenging terrain and weather constraints, all closures were installed on time and in full compliance, successfully stabilizing the area and mitigating risk.
